When a newborn arrives in this world, the parents are trying to make its life as comfortable and as beautiful as possible. They buy different clothes and diapers, warm blankets, a lot of toys and many pacifiers and bibs until they get the right ones. But the most important part of the newborn's day is when it's bedtime. Getting the right swaddles will give your baby a good night's sleep for a long, long time.
What's a Baby Wrap
Archaeological records show that swaddling is a technique that’s been around since 4,000 BC. It surely survived for that long because it’s beneficial for the child. This is a technique that parents use to gently wrap their newborns in soft and lightweight baby wraps in order to make them sleep calmly and comfortably. The main idea is to create a snuggly environment that mimics the mother’s womb.
The baby’s whole body is swaddled, leaving its neck and head free. This eliminates possible injuries or suffocation. Doctors say that because of the heat that’s retained with swaddling, premature babies don’t lose weight, but gain it instead. All in all, swaddling your baby can be a great idea and make your and their life much easier.
When to Start Swaddling?
A lot of parents don’t know when they should start swaddling their baby. And the answer is, as soon as they’re born and are very young babies. You can also start when they start showing they can roll over. This usually lasts for about 6 months, that’s the time when the swaddling stops. There are exceptions of course.
Once you notice the baby can roll on their tummy comfortably stop doing it. The wrap will make them uncomfortable and irritated. Instead, you can use a sleeping bag as an alternative. The baby will still be protected and cosy but without being restrained.
Types of Wraps
Traditional Swaddle Blankets
This traditional blanket comes in different designs and types. They're very popular because they’re practical and easy to use. They're versatile and mimic your touch. The two main fabrics they’re made of are cotton and bamboo, or a blend of 30% cotton and 70% bamboo. These blankets are lightweight and airy because they have a double gauze design. This makes them suitable for every season and weather condition.
They're breathable and maintain the body’s temperature at the right level, preventing overheating. They have moisture-wicking abilities which are great if you live in a warmer climate. The baby might get sweaty often, but the fibres will quickly soak up any liquid and leave the baby dry and comfortable.
Cotton is a great material because it gets softer and softer with each washing. Plus, it’s natural so there's a very low chance of allergies and irritations appearing on your newborn’s skin. The only disadvantage is that they get wrinkly after every wash. But if you don’t mind the wrinkles, cotton and bamboo traditional blankets are a great choice.
Sleep Sack Swaddles
This is a combination of the traditional blanket and a sleeping sack. It has the best of both worlds. These baby wraps are very loose and flexible which means the baby will be comfortable and relaxed. They're also safer for babies because they can’t be undone easily. The design is similar to a onesie and has simple closure designs. The most common ones are Velcro, zippers or snap closures that extend to the arms and legs as well.
You can use the sack swaddles for a newborn and up to 36 months of age. They're basically wearable blankets that are easy to use and take off and put on. The baby won’t be able to get out, even if it’s a more wiggly fellow. The only downside is that they can trap heat. So, make sure the baby gets enough ventilation.
Swaddle Pods
The other name for the swaddle pods is stretchy pods. They're made of an elastic material and have a zipper. It’s similar to the swaddle sack, but with extra stretchiness. It keeps your baby enclosed and free and cosy at the same time. It gives them more move for hip, arm and leg movement. Some designs are convertible and allow for a wrap without restricting the arms.
What to Consider When Buying?
If you’re a first-time mum you’re probably overwhelmed with all of the choices you need to make, including what type of swaddle to buy. There are several important points you should consider that will make your decision easier.
Comfort and Breathability
Comfort should be your top priority. Infants enjoy sleeping peacefully and cosy in swaddles that are snug and silky to the touch. Choose soft, comfortable fabrics that can calm your baby, such as cotton and bamboo-based fabrics. They're breathable and allow for airflow. Moreover, make sure to select a swaddle that's suitable for the baby's sensitive skin and won't irritate it.
Material
Soft materials such as cotton and bamboo are the best. Besides being gentle on the skin they offer protection from harmful bacteria. They have the capacity to wick away a lot of moisture leaving your baby dry during nap time. They’re suitable for any season and will keep the child cool in summer and warm during winter.
Durability
Due to the fact that the baby will spend a lot of time swaddled, the wrap you choose should be durable. It needs to handle all of the wear and tear. Of course, getting one that can be machine washed and dried will save you a lot of time. When you get the right product, you’ll realise this is something you can’t leave your house without.
Size
What is the best size for a baby swaddle? Well, there are several sizes available because babies grow so fast and will soon outgrow the wrap you bought just 3 weeks ago. There's a standard size that’s 80x80cm, but it can be too small even for some newborns. A 1mx1m would be great for a newborn, letting you comfortably wrap your baby inside. When the baby is over 2 months old, you can go for the 120cmx120cm wraps. They’ll be more comfortable, and you’ll probably use them until the child is 6 months old.
